Challenge: “Du bist nicht allein”
Fandom: Heroes of Olympus
Charaktere: Piper McLean, Leo Valdez
Wörter: ~ 1000
Warnung: Superhelden AU, Englisch
Widmung: [livejournal.com profile] nyx_chan, sorry, not sorry.
A/N: Inspiriert von wirklich niedlichem Fanart, und einer Diskussion mit Nyx darüber, dass Piper Nightwing ist. Ansonsten ist es nicht mal ein Drittel so gut wie es für die Idee und die Widmung sein sollte.

Piper had to fiddle a bit to pull her keys from her pocket and that was only partly due to the fact that her pants were too tight and the pockets fashionably small. Mostly it was due to her left arm hurting like a bitch if she so much as moved it. It had been a long night.

Finally, she managed to pull the apartment door open and froze immediately. It was just a faint sound, but there was someone in her living room. She wrapped her hands around her escrima sticks, barely managing to suppress a wince when every nerve in her left arm screamed in protest, and quietly closed the door behind her. Pressed close to the wall, she inched her way towards the small living room.

Something wasn’t right. - She could hear a person breathing, but it was slow and inordinately even. In the faint light falling into the room from outside, something metallic was gleaming just at the couch’s arm rest. Piper held her breath, creeping along the kitchen counter hoping to surprise the intruder from behind. Then she noticed the broken six-pack of beer on the couch table and the piece of metal on the arm rest actually looked a lot like the foot of a familiar bronze prosthesis.

“Leo?!”

The guy startled awake, pulling up his hands in a defensive position and rolling off the couch in the process.

“You’re home”, he mumbled from under the couch table. “Finally.

Piper grinned, but only slightly. “What are you doing here?”

“Checking up on you.” He grinned up at her from the living room floor. “How are you doing, Beauty Queen?”

With a sigh, Piper let herself drop onto the couch, leaving the escrima sticks on the table. “How did you even get in here?”

Please. - Also, not an answer to my question.”

Piper closed her eyes, thinking wistfully of her shower and the ice pack in the freezer and sleep and… She shook her head. “I’m good.”

Leo just raised an eyebrow, reproachfully as if he wasn’t the one lying on the floor in an apartment that he’d just broken into. Piper had nothing to offer against that look. “Just a bit tired.” Tired from lack of sleep, tired from working the morning shift at the diner and spending her nights patrolling the streets, tired of barely escaping Professor Cypher’s latest contraption, tired of being alone.

Leo, bless his heart, pretended not to hear anything she hadn’t said. “Of course. Grab a beer, I’ll get the ice pack and bandages and maybe I’ll even draw you a bath because I’m that great a friend.” He pushed himself up on his elbows and Piper grinned despite herself.

“...I haven’t been much of a friend, have I?”, she managed finally when Leo hobbled into the kitchen.

“Nah, you’ve been busy”, he answered over his shoulder, rummaging through her kitchen cupboard for the first aid kit, casually as if it was just another Saturday. He almost managed to mask the strained tone of his voice.

Piper winced. “It’s just… I needed to get out, you know?” She grabbed a beer from the table but instead of opening it, she just fiddled with the label. “I didn’t mean to leave you alone but...” There was no but. She hadn’t even thought about Leo, she’d just run. After Annabeth and Percy…

“No, I understand.” Leo carefully placed the first aid kit and the ice pack on the couch table before folding his leg prostheses under him and helping Piper to shrug out of her bright green suit. “There was no way you could have stayed after… everything.”

“But I’ve left you.”

With practised ease, Leo palpated her bruised and battered torso. “Well, if I had wanted to leave, I would have left with my legs, wouldn’t I?”

“Leo...”

Apparently satisfied that there were no broken bones, he started wrapping her arm with ace bandages, completely ignoring her objection. “And it’s okay, I’m more of a liability these last years, I get that. It’s just… You could have told me. I wouldn’t have said anything to Chiron.”

Piper swallowed heavily. The thing was, she didn’t know why she hadn’t told Leo. Hell, right know she couldn’t even explain to herself why she hadn’t taken him with her. So, instead, she focussed on the easy part.

“You’re not a liability. - You broke into my 12th floor apartment without triggering any of the alarms.”

Leo shrugged. “I had a lot of time.”

Leonidas.”

“I didn’t climb the fricking facade, I took the elevator and picked your lock!”

Piper smiled despite herself. “And hacked the alarm.”

He smiled right back at her. “And hacked the sorry excuse for an alarm. - Tomorrow I’ll get you a proper alarm system, maybe something with electric shockers? I feel electric shockers.”

With a sigh, Piper let her head drop against the back rest. “Why?”

“What do you mean, why?! Is there ever a time when electric shockers aren’t the right choice? Because if there is, I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.”

“Why did you pick my lock and hack my alarm?”

Leo stopped in the middle of his wild gesticulating, looking stunned. “Because you don’t answer your phone.”

He said it so matter-of-factly, it wrenched Piper’s heart. Obviously. “I left you alone with Chiron and Annabeth’s body and...” The hologram of Percy grinning widely in his stupid Blue Heron costume, because they hadn’t even found enough pieces of him to give him a proper burial. “I left you!”

Leo let himself sink into the couch cushions. “Exactly. I miss you, Beauty Queen.”

“But...”

“And it’s not exactly difficult to track your social security number and Whistling Dove was a really, really obvious choice for your new name, so, it’s been easy to worry about you.”

Piper could feel tears welling up in her eyes.

“Have you even slept in the past two nights? Or had a proper meal? - Cereal doesn’t count.”

“Leo…”

“I understand why you left. And I understand that you have to do this by yourself. But you’re not alone, Pipes. Not if you don’t want to.”

“Oh Leo.” Her voice almost broke on the name.

“No, I’m serious, your alarm was a joke, the single yoghurt in your fridge is almost as old as the apartment and your suit is in desperate need of some stitching. I spent the evening fixing your grappling hook and the TV and I have no idea how you ever thought you could do this without me. Seriously.”

Piper was grinning widely through her tears. “Yeah, me neither.”
