Rey doesn’t know the grey-haired pilot hurrying towards them (past them, she thinks, he hasn’t looked into their direction yet) but her gaze is inexplicably drawn to him. It takes her a few seconds to realize that it’s not actually her that’s drawn to him. She glances at Luke, who is walking two steps behind her, carefully not looking at the aging pilot.
She is not particularly good at reading emotions yet, and Luke is really good at disguising them, but Rey can see apprehension in the set of his shoulders and she can feel the unease and the pent-up tension and something beneath that, something darker, stronger…
And then the pilot, short as every fighter jock, locks eyes with Luke and stops dead in his tracks. So does Luke and a wave of emotion rolls over Rey. Guilt. The something is guilt, she thinks. Which is not exactly unusual for Luke, guilt and regret are his ever present companions, however much he tries to disguise them.
The pilot shrugs, and his anger and frustration are obvious even to Rey. Not too surprising, she figures, they have probably fought together, that’s a lot of history that can come between two men.
“I missed you”, he calls out when he hurries on, and he sounds honest enough about it. Old comrades, for sure. Luke at her side relaxes slightly.
When Poe hears the news of the Millenium Falcon’s return, he storms into the gym and drags Finn to the hangar. There is no way he was going to miss Finn’s reunion with Rey, the other man hasn’t stopped talking about her since he woke up.
Of course, Coalstreak and Cobalt are about to ship out, so the hangar is buzzing with hectic last-minute preparations and the usual pre-mission anxiety. General Antilles jogs past him with a slap on his back and a greeting that Poe doesn’t quite catch because he is too busy to watch Finn scanning the chaos for a familiar face.
Oddly enough, it’s Poe who sees her first. She’s looking at Antilles with her brows furrowed as if she’s trying to figure him out. Poe nudges Finn’s side and when he turns back to Rey and the cloaked figure beside her, Antilles is staring at them as if he’s seeing a ghost. Of course, the cloaked man can only be Skywalker.
Poe has grown up with stories about the early days of Rogue Squadron and gossiping pilots, he has heard all the rumors. And seen the pictures, Antilles and Skywalker have never been secretive about their relationship. But this isn’t the reunion of lovers. Or best friends, for that matter. Antilles barely shrugs before he continued on his way.
“I missed you”, he calls out, almost as an afterthought, and Skywalker seems to deflate.
And then, Finn wraps his arms around Rey, lifting her a few centimeters off the ground in the process. They’re both grinning stupidly wide and talking a mile a minute over each other and it’s impossible to understand a word they’re saying and Poe couldn’t care less about two old guys.
