“Come in,” Philippa announced when she heard the high pitched sound that was her door bell. The doors slid open and Michael walked in, with her hands behind her back, chin high. “You demanded to see me?”
“I did.” Philippa smiled and gestured towards a chair. “Sit with me.”
A slight raise of an eyebrow was shown but Michael did what she was told. Philippa herself sat down on the couch in her quarters and started to pour the tea in front of her on the table.
“If I may ask, Captain, what is this?”
Philippa looked up. “I presumed you favoured tea over coffee.”
Michael gave a short nod. “I do.”
“Then this is settled.”
Michael still seemed a little confused. “Excuse me, Captain, but I don’t understand this costum. I assumed you asked me to come so that you could value my work I delivered over the last weeks on this ship.”
“Oh, it’s remarkable and you know that better than I do.” Michael was incredible smart and talented but that was not the reason why Sarek brought her here. “There is something else I want to discuss with you. Drink!”
With a little hesitation Michael reached for one of the cups but refused to take a sip. She seemed tense and uncomfortable and this was exactly the point of her being here. “I heard you sit alone every morning in the mess hall.”
“I don’t require conversation during my meals,” Michael was quick to explain.
“And I hardly saw you talk to any of the other members of the crew.”
“I talk to them - if it is necessary. I talked with Lieutenant Commander Saru.”
Philippa let out a little laugh. “You fight with him, there is a difference.”
“Pardon me, Captain, but you didn’t specify the nature of those talks. If we use words - even if it is fighting - it is talking.”
With a quiet sigh Philippa leaned back. “Okay, you got me there. I want you to talk to the other members of the crew while you are not on your shift. I want you to get to know them a little, maybe make some friends on the way. This crew is not just any crew. We’re a family, we are friends. We trust each other and this is a lot easier if we know each other.”
“So you demand of me to make social conversation?”
Philippa nodded proudly. “Exactly and we will have dinner once a week so you can report to me about your progress.”
“Is that an order?”
“If it has to be so you come to my quarters next week at the same time, then yes it is. I myself would love to see it as an invitation because I’m part of the crew too and I’d love to get to know you a little better. So what will it be?”
Michael stood up and bowed a little. “I’ll gladly follow your invitation, Captain. I will see you next week.”
Philippa watched her leave with a satisfied smile on her face.
