Wade came to with a gasp for air. Always the same way he woke up when he had visited the underworld.
“Still everything attached?” he asked himself, got into an upright position and checked for anything out of the ordinary. He let his hand wander over his body and stopped right at his crotch. A smile formed under his mask. “Oh yeah, it is.”

Only then he thought about looking around. He had died in really weird places before, and in really weird ways too. Right now he was surrounded by debris in some sort of huge warehouse. Of course! He had fought some evil and mad super villain- and apparently died at the try to stop him. How heroic of him. Wade had to write it down in his “I’m trying to be a good guy” notebook. Pete would be so proud of him. Apropos, Pete, hadn’t he been here too?

Wade stood up, brushed off the dust from his suit and took a proper look around. The bad guy was nowhere in sight. Maybe he just took off after he had killed Wade. How rude. He could have waited for the second round.
“Spidey?” he shouted into the huge room. “You’re still here?”

No answer. It was not unusual that Pete just took off after one of their team ups. He liked to pretend that he couldn’t stand Wade and only worked with him because he felt the need to help everyone, being a superhero and all that. But normally he checked on him, especially when Wade had been hurt. Pete wouldn’t just take off when Wade lay dead on the ground. He would at least wait for Wade to wake up to tell him how much he hated him- and then take off.

Maybe the bad guy escaped and Pete went after him. After all he knew that Wade would be okay and catching the bad guy had a higher priority than looking for the dead friend who would be alive again in the next second.
Still, Wade had a bad feeling, and it got even worse when the voices in his head started to support his dark thoughts, telling him that Pete was probably already dead.

“Spiderman?” he yelled again. Still no answer.
A few steps further and something red flashed into his line of sight to his left, from under a huge boulder. Wade ran the last meters over to his friend. His leg was stuck under the debris, but the rest of his body didn’t look any better. A deep gash graced his chest. The red liquid soaked into his suit, made it a darker red than it usually was. Wade sank on his knees next to him, and pulled off his mask. Pete had his eyes closed and there was no reaction at all. But he was still breathing.

Wade immediately turned to Pete’s leg and moved away the debris. The shifting brought Pete out of his unconsciousness. With a painful groan he woke up, and Wade hated this sound. He didn’t want to see his little Spidey boy in pain.
“I’m almost finished,” Wade told him when he put the last stone away.
Pete almost jumped up as soon as Wade was done. “Where is this guy?” His voice turned into a high pitched scream as he tried to stand on his hurt leg. Before he could fall back to the ground, Wade had grabbed his arm and steadied him.

“No fucking clue. I was dead. Remember?”
Pete turned to him with a shocked impression. “I saw you go down, I didn’t realize-”, he mumbled quietly.
“Hey, I’m totally fine,” Wade assured him at once. Pete had a tendency to worry too much, and especially right now he shouldn’t worry about Wade. Wade could heal from anything, Pete couldn’t. “You aren’t though.”
Pete waved with his arm, and his face contorted into a pained expression. “‘M fine,” he muttered. “Just need some rest.”

“And nurturing! I can do that!” Wade exclaimed loudly and immediately hauled Pete up into his arms. “I’ll take you home and then I’ll make you some proper food.”
“No, Wade, seriously, I can get home by myself,” Pete protested and tried to free himself out of Wade’s grip. But Wade knew exactly that Pete was only shy, and didn’t mean it like that. This close proximity made him nervous and unsure, so Wade had to be a gentleman about it. No dirty jokes this time.

“I swear I won’t touch you in any inappropriate places, baby boy. Don’t worry. Just trust me.”
Pete stared at him with an open mouth. “I … I-” he stuttered incoherently. Clear proof that Wade was right. He was just nervous.
“I’ll take good care of you and earn some extra hero points.” Wade walked out of the big warehouse and tried to remember where he had parked his car. Unfortunately Spidey still didn’t want Wade riding on his back when they teamed up. This time they were lucky though. Wade had no idea how the hell they would have gotten home otherwise. He put Pete on the passenger’s seat and sat down behind the wheel.

It took them 20 minutes to get to Pete’s apartment. Wade did his best to avoid any curious neighbours. Normally Spidey entered through his window when he was in full gear to avoid to be seen. Now this wasn’t possible. Wade managed to get Pete inside without anyone seeing them though. And he was pretty proud of that. He was like a ninja, in full stealth mode.

As soon as Pete lay on the bed, he said, “Okay, thanks, you can leave now.”
Wade looked him up and down. His leg was clearly broken and the big gash on his chest might have stopped bleeding but it still needed to be treated. “You’re sure you don’t need help?”
Pete nodded, his eyelids starting to droop. “I’m fine.”

Wade doubted that. Pete could heal faster than other humans but not as fast as Wade, and even he needed some time for broken bones. But he understood when he wasn’t welcome. He still hadn’t enough hero points in his book to be in Peter Parker’s circle of trusted friends. He was just a social case for Peter, an experiment if a villain could be rehabilitated into a proper hero. But of course you couldn’t trust ex villains.

“Get some rest,” Wade said and threw Spidey’s mask over to him which he still had in his pocket.
Pete caught it with his fast reflexes and just stared at Wade for half a minute. Wade waited for something but nothing came. So he shrugged with his shoulders. “So, will head back out then. And let you rest.”
“Thank you, Wade.”
“Yeah, yeah, you said that already. Couldn’t leave you there half dead, could I?”

“Actually, you could have.” Pete looked at him so seriously that Wade needed to swallow around a lump in his throat. His stupid heart started to make a tap dance. “But you didn’t. You acted like a real hero today.”
“Can I get a ‘you did well’ sticker for my notebook?”
Pete cracked a smile. “You’ll get one. And a star- or five stars.”
Wade punched his fist into the air. “Yes!”

“And you can stay.” Pete’s voice was barely a whisper, clearly falling asleep. “I’m sorry, I just- I don’t like people seeing me like this. I feel weak … I don’t want to be weak. But you’re good. You can stay … I trust you,” he mumbled before closing his eyes completely.
