“I think, I did something really stupid,” Jim exclaimed loudly as soon as he had entered the room.
Leonard just raised his head and his eyebrow in the same motion. “You need to clarify. There are a lot of things that you could have done that are really really stupid. I can name at least ten of the top of my head.”
With a long suffering sigh Jim let himself fall on Leonard’s bed, bouncing a little up and down. “You need to promise not to laugh.”
“Can’t do that, kid. ‘M never promising something that I’m not sure I can keep.”
“You are the worst friend,” Jim whined dramatically.
Leonard just shrugged with his shoulders. “But you still put up with me.” Leonard stood from his chair and sat down next to Jim. “So what have you done this time?”
“I made a bet.”
Leonard nodded. This wasn’t too bad, though it depended on what kind of a bet it was. “With whom?”
“Cupcake!”
Leonard furrowed his brows. Jim somehow had nicknames for half their class. Leonard couldn’t keep up, even if he tried. “Who is that now?”
“Hendorff. Security track.”
“Ah, the big one.” Leonard remembered vaguely that Jim had told him about their first encounter the day before their shuttle ride to San Francisco. Jim had never been on the best terms with this guy and Leonard knew how much Jim loved to provoke others, especially when he felt superior. “So what kind of bet?”
“We were talking about Uhura and-”
Leonard interrupted him with a loud moan. “Oh please say you didn’t.”
“Hendorff seems to have a crush on her. So I thought it would be funny to prove to him that he has no chance so I dared him to ask her out. I bet that she would say no.”
Leonard could feel the smirk creeping up on his lips. “She said yes?”
“She said no to me so many times. Why would she say yes to Cupcake? It was such a safe bet.”
Leonard shook his head in disbelief. “You should have learned by now not to underestimate Uhura. She only declines your charming pursuits because she sees right through you. She knows you’re insincere. And she clearly saw that Hendorff wasn’t. He was probably very kind and honest. And why not give it a chance?”
“Hey, I can be kind and honest too,” Jim protested.
“I have never seen you being honest while talking to a beautiful woman.”
“I’ve always been honest to you.”
Leonard stared at Jim for a while after these words and there was an awkward silence all of a sudden between them. In the end Leonard cleared his throat. “So what did you lose in this stupid bet?”
Jim groaned again, letting himself fall back on the mattress. “Don’t ask. Please don’t ask.”
“That much to your honesty,” Leonard cracked a joke and stood up, still shaking his head. “Don’t expect me to bail you out of this, kid. You brought this up to yourself. And you can suffer the consequences.”
Jim pouted. “Booones, don’t be mean.”
“I’m not mean. I’m just the worst friend.” He smiled at Jim to let him know that he didn’t mean it seriously and just wanted to tease him a little. But he still wouldn’t help this infant. Jim could be Hendorff’s personal slave for all eternity, Leonard wouldn’t care. At least not for at least a week.
“I like you anyway,” Jim said with a wide smile on his face.
“Of course you do.”
