“Fascinating!” Spock kneeled down in front of the table and looked at the vase, which just vanished in front of all their eyes. “Must be some kind of stealth technology.”
“Seriously, Spock? After all that we have seen today?” Jim asked incredulously. “There were flying objects without any technology. Force fields without any power source. This is magic.” He sounded like a little boy on christmas and he certainly looked like it with his glowing eyes. McCoy could only smile at this.
“Captain!” Spock straightened his back and folded his hands behind his back. “There is no such thing as magic. This is merely a technology our minds can’t comprehend yet.”
“Exactly.” Excitedly Jim tapped Spock on the shoulder. “Magic!”
“Your conclusion is foolish and without any logic.”
Jim sighed and turned to McCoy. “Help me out here, Bones.”
McCoy just shrugged. “I’m sorry, Jim, but actually I’m on Spock’s side with this - and believe me, I can’t believe myself saying this.”
Spock nodded at him. “I welcome your assistance, Doctor. As unexpected as it came it feels refreshing.” A little smirk played around the corner of his mouth. He always felt so smug when he used one of the human words.
McCoy could only roll his eyes about this vulcan. “Don’t get used to it, Spock. I’ll be against your logical opinion 99% percent of the time. But now I can’t really argue with it. It is logical indeed.”
“Bones.” Jim slung his arms around his shoulders and pulled him closer. He pointed at the table where the vase was still standing but seen by no one. “It’s invisible!”
“It’s the 22nd century, Jim. We have seen invisible torpedos. Invisible ships. A vase is not really that fascinating,” McCoy commented.
“But how did she do it? She just stared at it and then it was gone?” Now he nodded in the direction of the little girl who was still just standing there, totally quiet, observing them with a tilted head.
“There could be a hidden device, captain.”
“That your sensors didn’t pick up, Mister Spock?” Jim raised an eyebrow at his first officer and McCoy had to restrain himself from giggling.
“The sensor was created by our experienced knowledge. If this is something entirely new it is only logical that the sensor can’t pick it up.”
“He has a point, Jim,” McCoy said with a smile.
“Argh, you two are no fun,” Jim exclaimed frustrated and threw his arms in the air. “We have witnessed the impossible today and you come me with logic. Even you, Dr. McCoy,” he pointed an accusing finger at him, “I’m really disappointed with you, Bones.”
McCoy just shrugged. “Maybe you just should leave me behind on the Enterprise for the next mission.”
“I don’t understand your outburst, captain. It’s merely logical to presume that these phenomenons we witnessed today and that you call magic are only a technology far beyond our own.”
Jim sighed theatrically again.
“Excuse me,” the little blond girl said out of the blue. “Can you tell me the difference between this magic, which is apparently a word for something that you can’t explain, and a higher technology that you don’t understand yet?”
“Technology is bound to certain rules, even if we don’t know them yet,” Spock explained immediately.
“And this magic isn’t?”
McCoy looked between Jim and Spock, both looking at each other and seeming lost for the right words.
“I think we all here can do something that you can’t comprehend yet. We are far more advanced. We have rules though. Not everything is possible, even if you might believe this now. And if you call it magic or higher technology is not important. So there is no need for a fight.”
“Ha,” Jim exclaimed with a smile. “Told you so, it’s magic.”
Spock was about to open his mouth but McCoy put a hand on his arm and shook his head slightly. “Just let him have this, Spock. Just look at him.”
Jim was rounding the table again with a big smile on his face and curiosity in his eyes, examining the invisible vase from every direction. Spock followed the doctor’s gaze and nodded finally. “As you wish, Doctor.”
