What if I told you that the world was gonna end
And you had fifteen minutes to spend with me or your friends
Mike Krohl - Fifteen Minutes
Whenever Leo had imagined the end of the world (and he had, okay?), he had sort of seen himself in a bar, chatting up girls with amazing apocalypse-centered pick-up lines and, naturally, getting shot down. In the more depressing cases, he'd imagined running and screaming and being mutilated by zombies. But holding his best friends hand, trying to talk him out of ending the world? That scenario had never even occurred to him.
Piper was clinging to Jason's other hand, whispering comforting, soothing nonsense. Leo wasn't exactly sure who she was trying to calm down, Jason or herself, but it worked for him.
"It's gonna be okay."
Jason tilted his head, slowly, deliberately. "The world is coming to an end," he said in that gravely, rumbling voice he had developed.
It was hard to argue with that, Leo figured.
"Sure," he nodded. "But we've survived worse, haven't we? Like that one time, when Khione tried to kill me? Or that time she wanted to stab me?"
"I need to go." Jason's eyes seemed to be glowing in a fiery yellow which made his skin look bluish and scaly. Probably not the strangest thing Leo had seen today but it made it almost impossible to recognise the dork who'd eaten a stapler once.
"No, just stay here, with us," Piper pleaded.
"Yeah! I'm sure you can, like, call in sick or something?"
"I have a duty." Jason took a step forward and dragged Leo and Piper with him, effortlessly. Sure, he was build like Captain frickin' America, but that was just ridiculous. Leo tightened his grip on Jason's hand.
"They are managing just fine without you!"
Piper was right, the bushes and trees along the street were engulfed in flames, houses crumbled to dust next to them and the tarmac blistered and bubbled. It was hard to imagine how Jason could possibly make it worse.
Especially Jason.
Generous, kind, loyal-to-a-fault Jason Grace. He was the best person Leo had ever met and not the Antichrist.
But, apparently, the fates thought differently.
"They need me," Jason said.
"No they don't!" Piper and Leo protested.
"Yes, they do," a friendly voice said.
Before them, in the middle of bubbling and hissing tarmac stood four motorcycles that a second ago hadn't been there. The first one was white and its rider was a lanky guy with sickly green skin and messy blond curls. He was smiling apologetically. The woman on his left was riding a blood red bike and frowned, obviously annoyed. To her left was a scary blonde balancing a scale over the handlebars of her black bike. The last guy, riding a wanly coloured bike and dressed completely in black robes, was the one who had spoken. Leo thought he had met him before, somehow.
"Aren't you supposed to be horsemen?" He couldn't help himself. Motorcycles. Ridiculous.
The blonde woman fixed her grey eyes on him and grinned. "That's what I said. But, apparently, times change."
Piper, on Jason's other side, snorted. "Well, the bike gang look works for you. Very Hell's Angels."
That, in turn, had the the guy with the white bike chuckle which earned him a blow with the sword hilt from the woman to his side.
"Ouch!"
"Grow up."
"Screw you, Clarisse, screw you."
The blonde woman turned to them, and her stink eye made Leo want to cover behind the closest burning hedge. "Stop it, you two."
"She started it!"
"Shut up, Solace!"
Jason had watched that whole encounter with something resembling professional interest and - but that was impossible, obviously - resigned familiarity. But now, he straightened his shoulders, shaking off Leo and Piper easily. "STOP IT," he hollered and all four immediately stood to attention and the tarmac around them started to boil.
Leo took a shaking breath that seemed to burn in his lungs as he watched something that just hours ago had been Jason Grace close the distance between them and the horsemen. With every step it took, it seemed to grow until it stood over two meters tall.
On Leo's right, Piper let out a strangled sob. "Jason!"
The thing turned around, flaming yellow eyes glowing in a scaly face that only bore passing resemblance to their friend. "We need to go," it said, its voice low and vibrating in the air around them.
It turned back to the horsemen. "Come."
The four turned as one, engines howling. Only the last of the four, the one in the black robes, that looked so awfully familiar, looked back at Leo and Piper. "Don't worry. It will be over soon."
Nothing about that sentence should have been comforting, but it kind of was. Leo broke down in hysterical laughter. Piper on his side was crying and laughing at the same time. Together, they watched the horsemen and Jason vanish into the smoke.
"So, the end of the world?" Leo finally asked, when he couldn't endure the screams in the distance anymore.
"Apparently," Piper smiled. "What are the odds?"
"Well, your boyfriend is the Antichrist, it was bound to happen."
"Yeah, I always thought those cheek bones were sort of out of this world."
Leo snorted. "At least we got front row seats. It could be worse."
Piper grabbed his hand, entangled her fingers with his and didn't say anything for quite some time. Around them, the world was burning, the stars started to fall, one by one, and Piper smiled, squeezing his hand a little tighter. "Yeah. It could be so much worse."
