A/N: Ein Coffee Shop AU! ...Das in meinem Kopf merkwürdige Blüten mit Surfern und Robotik-Studenten treibt, aber… Coffee Shop.

"How come that when she does it, making coffee looks like science?" Leo is sitting at the counter, nursing his cup of coffee (black, none of that fancy crap) and studies Annabeth's every movement with intent.

Piper swats him with a towel. "Because it is."

He raises an eyebrow until it vanishes into his mess of dark curls. "Well, it shouldn't be." He gesticulates to the shop's old espresso machine, the abomination that has tried to kill Piper at least twice last week and smiles fondly. "That's a beautiful piece of engineering, designed to make coffee. You treat her right, and you get coffee. Easy."

"I only ever get second degree burns," Piper mutters and continues wiping down the counter, humming along to the song on the radio. Leo proceeds in staring at Annabeth over the rim of his coffee mug, frowning slightly.

It's their Monday morning routine: Piper sets up the shop before opening and Leo keep her company in exchange for the caffeine necessary to survive his six-thirty robotics lecture. Annabeth doesn't mind as long as they don't interrupt her when she is fiddeling with all the little silver levers of the espresso machine. And they never would because whatever Annabeth is doing there, science or magic (it's an entirely plausible hypothesis, shut up, Leo) or whatever, produces the best coffee in all of New Rome.

"I have seen people handle millons of dollars worth of Mars rover with less care than that..." Leo sounds entirely smitten, but it's hard to tell whether it's the smart blonde woman or the delicate machine that he's ogling, both are entirely his type. Only, Piper knows for a fact that he thinks Annabeth is freaking scary (which she is), so it's probably the latter. Smart choice.

"Maybe it's not science but an art," she suggests before getting Leo an unsolicited (but highly welcome) refill.

"Ah, the lines get blurry with machines like that..."

But everything Annabeth does turns into a science. She studies architecture which suddenly transforms into a whole lot of maths when she talks about it. Piper has seen a few of her designs and they are incredible: Beautiful, complicated and seemingly defying the laws of physics. Annabeth, however, says they are entirely possible and carefully calculated and not worth the paper they are drawn on. Because they are too aloof or self-indulgend or whatever. So, not art. Science.

Annabeth reduces even surfing to calculations and perfectionism whenever Piper can convince her to go out with her. Annabeth Chase hanging ten looks like the statue a Greek goddess. It's kind of disconcerting. (And a little bit sexy. Nerdy blondes are totally Piper's type.)

"Anyway, I need to run. Monte Carlo localisation is calling me. Bye, beauty queen." Leo presses a quick kiss on Piper's cheek and waves in Annabeth's general direction before leaving for his lecture and opening the shop's door for the guy in hospital scrubs waiting there already, impatiently.

"Morning ladies!"

Annabeth looks up from her work, a complacent little smile playing around her lips. "Morning, Will. The usual?"

"As long as it's caffeinated I don't care."

Right behind the nurse who always drops by after his night shifts is their other way-too-early-for-a-Monday regular: Clarisse, just done with her morning run. Piper gets Will his muffin from the glass case and nudges Annabeth in the side, just slightly, to draw her attention away from the shot she's pulling to the newcomer. This is Piper's Monday morning highlight, the only thing that makes her want to keep the job at the coffee shop instead of begging Percy for more hours at the surf school.

Because Annabeth makes even flirting look like a science. And one she hasn't quite figured out at that.
